Garage Door Won't Close? Here's Why (and What to Do)

Few things are more frustrating — or more concerning — than a garage door that refuses to close. It's a security risk, an energy waste, and an open invitation to pests and weather. If you're dealing with this problem in Cypress, TX or the NW Houston area, here are the most common causes and what to do about each one.

1. Sensor Misalignment (Most Common)

By far the most frequent cause of a door that won't close. Every garage door has two photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the tracks, about 6 inches off the ground. If they're misaligned, dirty, or obstructed, the door will reverse immediately when you try to close it. Clean the lenses and make sure both sensors show a steady light. Gently adjust until they're pointing directly at each other.

2. Track Obstruction

Even a small object in the door's path — a toy, a leaf, a piece of debris — can trigger the safety reverse. Walk the full length of both tracks and clear anything that shouldn't be there. Also check for dents or bends in the tracks themselves.

3. Broken Springs

If the door won't move at all, or you heard a loud bang from the garage, a spring likely broke. The door will feel extremely heavy if you try to lift it manually. Do not attempt to force the door closed — call a professional immediately. Broken springs are the most dangerous garage door repair.

4. Limit Switch Issues

The limit switches tell the opener where the door should stop when opening and closing. If the close limit is set incorrectly, the opener may think the door has hit something when it hasn't, causing it to reverse. These are small adjustment dials on the side of the opener unit.

5. Dead Remote Batteries

If your remote won't close the door but the wall button works fine, replace the remote batteries. This is the simplest fix and the one most people overlook.

6. Power Outage

After Houston storms knock out power, your opener won't work until electricity is restored. You can close the door manually by pulling the red emergency release cord and lowering the door by hand. Make sure to re-engage the opener after power returns.

7. Broken Cables

If you see loose cables hanging beside the door or wound up on the floor, a cable has snapped. The door may hang crooked or refuse to move. Like broken springs, this requires professional repair — cables are under significant tension.

Don't Leave Your Door Open Overnight

A garage door stuck open overnight is a serious security risk. Burglars specifically target open garage doors, and in Cypress, wildlife like raccoons and snakes have been known to make themselves at home. If you can't get the door closed, pull the emergency release and lower it manually until a technician can fix the underlying issue.
