5 Warning Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is About to Break

A broken garage door spring isn't just inconvenient — it can be dangerous. The good news? Springs rarely break without warning. If you know what to look and listen for, you can catch a failing spring before it snaps and schedule a safe, affordable replacement on your terms.

The 5 Warning Signs

1. Your Door Feels Heavier Than Usual

Try this test: pull the emergency release and manually lift your door halfway. A properly balanced door should stay in place. If it feels heavy or drops quickly, your springs have lost tension and are nearing the end of their life.

2. The Door Opens Unevenly

If one side of your door rises higher than the other, or the door tilts when opening, it usually means one spring is weaker than its partner. This puts extra strain on your opener and can damage the tracks over time.

3. You See Gaps in the Spring Coils

Walk into your garage and look at the torsion spring above the door. A healthy spring has tightly wound coils with no visible gaps. If you see a section where the coils are stretched apart or separated, the spring is on its last legs.

4. The Door Slams Shut

A garage door should close slowly and smoothly. If it drops the last foot or two with a bang, the springs aren't providing enough counterbalance. This is a safety hazard — a falling door can cause serious injury.

5. Your Opener Struggles or Strains

If your opener motor sounds like it's working harder than usual, or if it stops mid-cycle, weak springs may be forcing the opener to lift more weight than it's designed for. This can burn out your opener motor, turning a $300 spring replacement into a $600+ repair.

What to Do If You Notice These Signs

Do not attempt to replace springs yourself. Garage door springs are under extreme tension — hundreds of pounds of force — and can cause serious injury or death if handled improperly. Call a licensed professional.

At Garage Goat, we use high-cycle springs rated for 25,000+ cycles per manufacturer cycle-life rating (that's 10-15 years of daily use) and back them with a lifetime warranty. Most replacements take under 90 minutes and we carry springs for all standard door sizes on our trucks.
